Medical examinations

The different types of visits

Recruitment

The recruitment examination checks for any incompatibility of the employee with the requirements of the position.

This is a mandatory check to obtain a fitness note, which is required in the Principality for the issuance of a work permit by the employment service; failure to attend the examination may be detrimental to the eligibility status of new employees.

At the end of the examination, the occupational physician will provide the employee with information and advice on the prevention of risks associated with the job.

Pre-employment

A pre-employment examination is requested by the employer and is essential for certain occupations that entail risk, or safeguarding against risk, prior to appointment.

Risk occupations include, for example, professional scuba divers, grandstand erectors, etc.

Safeguarding positions are those where any default on the part of the employee would jeopardise the lives of others (crane drivers, machine operators, public transport drivers, etc.)

A pre-examination is also required for employees under the age of 18 at the time of appointment.

Routine

Routine examinations are assigned by the OMT to detect and identify work-related illnesses at an early stage. The frequency of these examinations varies according to the nature of the occupational risks to which the employee is exposed.

The medical examination may include additional tests (hearing test, glaucoma screening, pulmonary function test, etc.) The doctor may also require certain tests that are conducted outside the company for appropriate medical supervision (test for chemical substances in the blood, CT scan, etc.)

At the end of the examination, the occupational physician will provide the employee with information and advice on the prevention of risks associated with the job.

Recommended public health vaccinations and mandatory vaccinations for particular occupations are performed on site by nurses, on instruction from the occupational physician.

Anyone aged 50 or over will be offered a colorectal cancer screening test as part of a campaign to prevent the disease, organised by the Principality.

Return to work

A return to work examination is required after an absence from work of more than 21 days, following an accident at work, an occupational illness, maternity leave or any non-occupational illness. The purpose it to establish fitness to return to work in the same role.

A examination prior to return to work can be requested when adjustments are required to the employee's work station.

Following the visit, a fitness note is issued by the occupational physician which notifies the employer of any recommended or prescribed restrictions or modifications to the job.

Requested by another doctor

Office or the employee's own doctor, etc. where there are occupational issues that may conflict with an employee's health.

By dint of his/her experience of the company, the occupational physician may suggest temporary or permanent occupational adjustments to adapt the work to what the employee is capable of.

Similarly, he/she may take the work situation into consideration if the employee develops any illnesses (occupational illness, exposure to chemical substances, allergies, etc.)

At the request of the employee

The employee may request an examination voluntarily for any work-related health issue, by applying to the office of the occupational physician responsible for the company.

The examination may remain confidential if the employee wishes.

Speaking to the doctor in strict professional confidence may help clarify situations that are often complex and establish means of resolving the issue with the doctor's experience of the company.

At the request of the employer

An examination may be requested by the employer by applying to the office of the occupational physician responsible for the company, if he/she considers an employee's state of health may be detrimental to safety in the workplace.

The employer informs the employee and the occupational physician of the reasons for requesting the examination before the consultation takes place, so that the employee is fully aware of the situation.

The doctor then informs the employer of the fitness outcome, in strict professional confidence.
